A very soft stone that can be difficult to make jewlery with.
One of tourmaline's most distinguishing abilities is its ability to become electrically charged simply by heating or rubbing it.  When charged, one end becomes positive and the other negaitve, allowing to to attract or repel particles of dust or bits of paper.  This property was well known by Dutch traders of the 1700's who used Tourmaline to pull ash from their pipes.
In industry, tourmalines are highly valued as electrical tuning circuits for conducting television and radio frequencies.  They are used for their durability since high frequencies can be passed through them without shattering, as many other crystals do. 
Many healers believe tourmaline can assist in healing on all levels- spiritual, physical, mental and emotional, thereby regarding it one of the most powerful healing stones.
