Black Spinel is one of my favorite stones. Not only is it beautiful, an under-rated alternative to the often blood-stained Diamond, but it is strong.  It's a 7.5-8 on the MOH's hardness scale (diamonds are a 10). It is not prone to chipping and is highly reflective; mesmerizing to look at.
In the healing world, spinel is used for its stabilizing effect as a Root Chakra stone. It can bring a soothing sense of calm in the midst of high energy and challenging situations. Spinel is also a lovely stone for reducing stress and relieving depression, as well as encouraging one to move towards one's best blessing even if it may appear difficult.
Whatever draws you to a stone is up to you and your choice completely. Follow your gut when picking out jewelry.
